How to choose a kids' side-by-side

A kids' side-by-side, also called a UTV, is styled after the off-road utility vehicles adults drive: a steering wheel instead of handlebars, and a seat you sit in rather than straddle. Most are two-seaters, so your child can bring a sibling or friend along, and there are single-seat and toddler versions too. Here is what to look at.

  • Age and power. For ages 1.5 to 3, the Can-Am Commander Foot to Floor has no battery at all: your toddler pushes along with their feet. For ages 3 to 8, our electric side-by-sides run on 24V or 48V and have the power for grass and gravel paths. Compare other options in our 24V ride-ons.
  • One or two seats. The Storm, Storm Police, Arctic Cat Wildcat XX and Can-Am Maverick 48V seat two. The Can-Am Maverick 24V and the Commander Foot to Floor seat one.
  • Rated weight. Limits go from 66 lbs on the single-seaters to 132 lbs on the Storm and Wildcat two-seaters. With two riders, their combined weight must stay within the limit.
  • Theme. Choose a licensed Can-Am or Arctic Cat, or a Freddo Storm, including a police version with lights and sirens for pretend-play patrols.

Our kids' side-by-sides

Driving a side-by-side safely

Most of our side-by-sides seat two, which means a little more planning:

  • Agree on the driver. Take turns behind the wheel, and make sure the passenger keeps hands and feet inside.
  • Buckle up. Use the seat belts on models that have them for every ride, even short ones.
  • Stay under the limit. The combined weight of both children must stay within the rated maximum.
  • Supervise closely. Keep rides to yards, parks and private paths, away from roads, pools and steep slopes. Toddlers on the foot-to-floor model need an adult right beside them.
  • Start gently. If your side-by-side offers more than one speed, start on the lowest. Where a parental remote is listed on the product page, keep it nearby for the first rides.

Buying a kids' side-by-side in the US

Our kids' side-by-sides ship free across the US. Two-seaters are wider than single-seat ride-ons, so measure the garage, shed or basement corner where it will live between rides.

Kids' side-by-side FAQ

What is a kids' side-by-side?

It is another name for a kids' UTV: a ride-on with a steering wheel and a sit-in seat, usually with two seats next to each other so two children can ride together.

What age is a kids' side-by-side for?

The electric side-by-sides here are rated for ages 3 to 8. The Can-Am Commander Foot to Floor is rated for ages 1.5 to 3.

Is there a side-by-side for toddlers?

Yes. The Can-Am Commander Foot to Floor is a push-along side-by-side for ages 1.5 to 3, with no battery. For more first rides, see our ride-on toys for 1 to 3 year olds.

Do you have a 12V UTV ride-on?

The electric side-by-sides in this collection are 24V or 48V. For a lower-voltage option, browse our 12V ride-ons.

Is there a Can-Am kids' side-by-side?

Yes. The Can-Am Maverick comes as a 48V two-seater and a 24V single-seater, and the Can-Am Commander Foot to Floor is made for toddlers. See all our Can-Am ride-ons.

Side-by-side or ATV: which is better for my child?

Choose a side-by-side for a steering wheel and, on most models, room for two. Choose an ATV for one rider and handlebars. Both are part of our off-road ride-ons for kids.
